The first statewide bar association in Arizona was established in 1895. Membership became mandatory in 1933. Arizona currently has approximately 24,000 attorneys licensed to practice. In February 2012, Arizona started administering the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).
What is the structure of the UBE?
The UBE consists of a 200-question multiple-choice exam, known as the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a closed-universe practical exam, known as the Multistate Practical Test (MPT), and a four-essay section, known as the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE).
What is tested on the bar exam?
The subjects tested on the UBE include Real Property, Torts, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, Conflicts of Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Business Associations, Sales, and Secured Transactions. Not all these topics will appear on every exam, but applicants can be tested on any subject listed above.
How is the Arizona Bar Exam scored?
Arizona grades the MPT and MEE sections of the bar exam, while the National Council of Bar Examiners scores the MBE.
When will I receive my results?
Results for the February exam are released on or before the second Friday in May (Arizona State Bar Admission Office – Admission by Bar Examination).
Can I transfer my UBE score from another state?
Yes, as long as you scored 273 or greater before July 2023 and 270 or greater after July 2023, and submit the $1,800 fee.
Can I use my laptop to take the bar exam?
Yes, a $125 laptop fee must be paid directly to ILG Exam 360 (ILG Exam360). Laptop registration begins on January 15, 2025, at 9:00 AM and closes on January 31, 2025, at 5:00 PM.
When is the deadline to register for the February 2025 bar exam?
The last day to register for the February 2025 bar exam is November 30. If the application is submitted on or after November 1, 2025, there will be a $100 late fee.
Do I need to take the MPRE to be admitted in Arizona?
Yes, you must score an 85 on the MPRE to be admitted to practice law in Arizona (Arizona State Bar Admission Office – Frequently Asked Questions).
What if I need accommodations for the Bar Exam?
Arizona requires those seeking accommodations to submit a Request for Testing Accommodations, an Objective Clinical Verification completed by a medical professional, a Law School Accommodation Verification if you received testing accommodations in law school, and a Bar Admissions Administer Verification if you requested accommodations in another jurisdiction, regardless of whether the accommodations were granted.
