The Hawaii Bar Exam is a 2-day examination. Day 1 consists of six 30-minute MEE (Multistate Essay Exam) essay questions, then two 90-minute MPT (Multistate Performance Test) questions, a Legal Ethics Examination, and finally a half-hour multiple-choice exam (15 questions). Day 2 is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam.
Constitutional Law, Contracts (including UCC Article 2: Sales), Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Civil Procedure (both Hawaii Civil Procedure and Federal Civil Procedure), Evidence, Real Property, Torts, Business Associations (including Corporations, Agency, Partnerships, and LLCs), Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts and Estates (including Wills, Trusts, and Future Interests), and Secured Transactions (UCC Article 9).
A scaled score of 85 on the MPRE is required for admission. The MPRE must be taken and passed not earlier than 2 years before the Hawaii Bar Examination, and the MPRE score must be officially reported to the Board not later than 1 year after date of notification of passing the Hawaii Bar Examination.Need to sign up for MPRE? The Hawaii Bar Exam is scored 50% on the MBE and 50% on the written portion (MEE and MPT), a total passing score of 268 is required.
The results are typically released 6-8 weeks after the exam.
Hawaii does not accept MBE scores from other jurisdictions.
Hawaii does not provide for admission on motion; examination is required of all applicants.
