What is Privilege (Law of Defamation)?

The ability to speak contrary to another's rights without the person having legal redress for the consequences. A defense to defamation in that the communication was privileged due to being made under some recognized duty, and thus exempt from liability. Example, statements by judges, lawyers, jurors and witness in a court proceeding are privileged even if defamatory.
