Learn about the definition for this legal term.

What is Dependency Exemption?

A parent who has physical custody of a child can list that child as a dependency deduction on his or her tax return. In some instances, where the majority of financial support of the child is provided by the noncustodial parent, the parties may agree that the supporting parent will take the dependency deduction.
