The Rhode Island Bar Exam is a 2-day exam. Day 1 consists of two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions and six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) questions. Day 2 is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam.

What’s the minimum score for MPRE?
A scaled score of 80 on the MPRE is required for admission before taking the bar exam. MPRE scores are valid for two years.

How is the exam scored?
MBE, essay, and MPT scores are scaled (MBE weighted 50%, MEE 30%, and the MPT 20%) and combined to determine if a passing score of 276 was achieved. A minimum MBE score of 130 must be achieved.
When are the results released?
Results are released in mid-May for the February exam and in mid-October for the July exam.
Can I transfer my MBE scores from another jurisdiction?
Rhode Island accepts MBE scores from other jurisdictions only if taken in a concurrent bar exam.
What about reciprocity across states?
Rhode Island does not provide for admission on motion; examination is required of all applicants. Attorneys who have engaged in the active practice of law for 5 of the 10 years immediately preceding the application are required only to take the Rhode Island essay exam and MPT, which requires a scaled score of 138 to pass.
